IPL 2022: Virat Kohli will head into the new 10-team season as the league's leading run-getter. The former RCB captain will look to return to his peak form and make sure he distances himself from the chasing pack.
Virat Kohli will head into Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as the league's highest run-getter and chances are that the former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain will retain his place at the top of the elite list after the 10-team season, starting March 26 in India.
Virat Kohli, who began his career at RCB in 2008, has been one of the most consistent performers with the bat despite not being able to win the elusive title. Kohli quit as RCB captain, ending a tenure that lasted close to a decade without managing to lay his hands on the trophy. But the Delhi batter has been the most successful batter, despite not being the most flamboyant in the league.
IPL 2022: Full Coverage
Virat Kohli is the only better in the 14-year-long history of the league to have scored more than 6000 runs. Kohli has 6283 runs in 207 matches at an average of 37.40. He has scored 5 hundreds, 4 of which came in the dream season in 2016 where he set the record for the most runs scored in an edition of the IPL -- 973 runs.
Kohli has scored in excess of 400 runs per season in each of his last 7 seasons, barring the 2017 season wherein he managed just 308 runs. Even when he struggled tor big runs last season, Kohli managed to score 405 runs. It was no surprise when Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Kohli for Rs 15 crore (the highest bracket) despite the former India captain not leading the side.
Kohli, who is free of the burden of captaincy across all formats, will be looking to express himself freely and add to the tally. The former skipper will be keen on putting up a big show in IPL 2022 to make sure that he regains the confidence in the lead up to the T20 World Cup.
A close second to Virat Kohli is Shikhar Dhawan, who will begin a new chapter in his IPL career, playing for Punjab Kings. The left-handed Indian opener has been one of the most consistent batters in the league, scoring 5784 runs, including 2 hundreds.
