Eight people suffered overdoses near a homeless shelter in downtown Montreal on Sunday.
Six of them were found on the corner of St-Dominique and Ontario Streets around 4:10 p.m., half a block from the Projets Autochtones du Québec (PAQ) shelter.
Workers at the shelter, located inside the Hôtel des Arts, administered the opioid antidote naloxone before paramedics arrived.
Four of the victims were rushed to hospital. As of Monday morning, three are in stable condition, but a 42-year-old woman remains in a critical state.
According to PAQ's executive director, the second incident occurred about an hour later inside the shelter itself. Two men suffered overdoses but were in stable condition when they arrived at the hospital.
Montreal police could not say what drug or drugs caused the overdoses. An investigation is underway to determine if the same substance was behind both events.
