Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has asked journalist Mohammad Zubair to plead before the bench of Justice DY Chandrachud in his petition against multiple cases registered against him.
Lawyer for Mohd Zubair told the CJI: “There is a slew of FIRs against him. As soon as he gets bail in one case, he is arrested in another. As we speak he is arrested again.” To this, the CJI said: “I'm listing the matter before the bench hearing it.”
Earlier, AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair had moved the Supreme Court seeking to quash all six cases registered against him by the Uttar Pradesh police over his ‘controversial’ tweets. The six FIRs were filed against him in UP’s Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, Sitapur, Lakhimpur and Hathras.
Zubair, in his plea before the top court, had also challenged the constitution of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the UP Police to probe the pending cases against him. He had requested the top court to club the cases together with the one registered in Delhi, in which he was first arrested, and sought interim bail in all six FIRs.
Mohammed Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets and was sent to one-day police custody by the trial court on the same day.
After being produced on the expiry of his one-day custodial interrogation, his custody was extended by another four days by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM).
