Modernisation work at Chidambaram railway station nearing completion

Chidambaram railway station modernization nears completion under ABSS scheme, enhancing passenger amenities and travel experience with new facilities.
The modernisation work being executed in Chidambaram railway station in Cuddalore district, at a cost of ₹5.96 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), is nearing completion.
The restoration work aims at providing better amenities for passengers, including a waiting hall, ticket counters, improved platform and ramp facilities for persons with disabilities.
According to Railway officials, as many as 15 railway stations in Tiruchi Railway Division, including Tirupadripuliyur, Vriddhachalam and Chidambaram in Cuddalore district and Villupuram had been identified to be given a complete makeover and enhanced passenger amenities. About 98% of the work in Chidambaram railway station has been completed.
A slew of works was taken up at the station, which included construction of an entrance arch, improvement of circulating area, concourse and booking office, platform shelters, provision of lighting and signage boards, additional benches and dedicated parking lots.
“The front elevation work with development of parking space and pedestrian pathways, and work in retiring rooms in the station building have been completed. The construction of a new toilet block on platform number 1 has also been completed. New signage boards and LED display boards to facilitate easy navigation for passengers and to provide them with essential travel information have been installed at the station,” a Railway official said.
An integrated Passenger Information System is being set up to provide real-time updates on train schedules, platform changes and other crucial travel information to ensure a seamless journey for commuters. The modernisation of the station is aimed at enhancing the overall travel experience of passengers.
The ABSS is an ongoing mission of the Indian Railways launched in February 2023 to redevelop 1,275 stations nationwide.
