Tamil Nadu police booked eight people under the Pocso Act for the death of a minor girl in Madurai. The victim had run away with the accused, Nagur Hanifa.
When the accused’s mother told him to return the girl home, he told her that they would commit suicide together. While the victim swallowed the poison tablet, the accused spit it out and survived. The victim died in the hospital after not responding to treatment.
The parents of the 17-year old victim from Thumbaipatti in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai filed a complaint with the police that their daughter went missing on February 14. The parents had initially requested the police not to file an FIR, fearing that it would spoil the child’s future.

But after police insisted, the family agreed to file an FIR and a missing person case was filed on February 21. Upon primary investigations, police discovered that the child was close to a man, Nagur Hanifa, from the same area.
On March 3, Nagur Hanifa’s mother, Madina, had reportedly brought back the child in an unconscious state and left her at her parent’s home.
The child was then taken to a private hospital where she was given treatment. But, after her condition worsened, she was moved to Melur Government Hospital.
