The deadline to file the Income Tax Returns ended on Sunday, July 31. For the assessment year 2022-23, as many as 5,82,88,962 people have filed Income Tax Returns so far. According to the Income Tax Department, 67,97,067 ITRs were filed in a day till 11 pm on Sunday. As many as 4,50,013 returns were filed in just one hour between 10 pm and 11 pm.

According to tax laws, a Rs 5,000 late fee would be payable by people having an annual income of over Rs 5 lakh, if they file their ITR by December 31 of the assessment year. Individuals with an annual income below Rs 5 lakh will be liable for a late fee of Rs 1,000 for delayed return filing.
