An 11-year-old girl in Surat district was allegedly raped and murdered on Sunday evening. The police have registered a case based on a complaint by the victim's family and have started an investigation.
The incident took place in Jolwa village in Surat district. The police are interrogating two people on the suspicion of the victim's mother.
The girls' parents -- both daily wage labourers, found their daughter was missing. Later, they discovered the girl's body in a room of a building near their house, lying in a pool of blood.
The girl's family rushed her to a private hospital where the doctors present declared the girl dead. The body was sent to new civil hospital in Surat for post-mortem.
On Monday afternoon, Surat Range IG Rajkumar Pandian inspected the incident spot. While addressing the media present there, he made the blunder of making the victim's family members' identity public.
The rape and murder of the 11-year-old comes close to the heels of the murder of Grishma Vekaria, thus putting a question mark on the law and order situation of Surat.
The BJP-ruled state recently witnessed a shuffle in the government ranks -- from the chief minister to some cabinet-ranked ministers being replaced, but the change does not seem to have any significant effect on the law and order situation.
