AIMIM's Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi wins Hyderabad Local Authorities' constituency election with 63 votes, defeating BJP's N. Goutham Rao.
AIMIM candidate Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi emerged victorious in the elections held to the Telangana Legislative Council’s Hyderabad Local Authorities’ constituency, securing 63 votes out of the 88 votes polled. A total of 112 were eligible to vote.
He defeated his nearest rival N. Goutham Rao of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who secured 25 votes. The polling was held on Wednesday (April 23, 2025). The ruling Congress and the main opposition party Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) did not field their candidates.
However, Congress extended support to the MIM candidate as a part of their electoral agreement. The BJP and the Congress were engaged in a verbal duel before the election with the former saying Congress was appeasing the MIM and the Congress accusing the BJP of provocative politics seeking votes only in the name of Hinduism.
The 112 eligible voters in the election included 81 Corporators of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and 31 ex-officio members — MLAs, MPs, and MLCs.

Bangladesh is witnessing renewed political tension after the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a young leader who emerged during the July–August 2024 uprising that led to the removal of Sheikh Hasina. Hadi later headed the radical group Inquilab Mancha and was campaigning ahead of the 2026 parliamentary election when he was shot in Dhaka. His death has triggered protests, diplomatic friction with India, and concerns over rising political violence as Bangladesh heads towards elections under an interim government.
