Karnataka government is set to establish a military school in the name of freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna at a cost of Rs 180 crore. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that school is likely to be taken over by the Ministry of Defence.
Speaking after garlanding the statue of Rayanna on his 191st Remembrance Day, Bommai said that state government has already released Rs 55 crore for the project.
"Construction work on the school will be completed this year. Discussions are on with the Defence Ministry to take over the school. The defense ministry is likely to convert it into a military school. Hostels and all the other facilities are coming up on 100-acre land," Bommai said.
Bommai said that works to develop Rayanna's resting place at Nandagad will be taken up as part of the project. A rock garden has also been approved by the government. These memorials are being built to provide a glimpse into the life of Rayanna for the young generation, Bommai added.
According to Bommai, the state government is committed to keeping alive Rayanna's ideals of patriotism, integrity and valour in present society.
The administration is considering issuing orders to have Rayanna's portraits displayed in all schools and colleges. There are also proposals to name roads in Bengaluru after freedom fighters. MP PC Mohan has submitted a request for the same. A suitable decision would be taken in this regard, Bommai said.
The state government has also written to Delhi government to install a statue of Rayanna in Delhi. Bommai also said talks had been held with sculptors to have statues of Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna in the premises of Suvarna Vidhan Soudha in the Belagavi district.
