Michael Atkins, founder and longtime publisher of Northern Life weekly newspaper has died

Tributes and memories are being shared in Sudbury after the passing this week of a longtime editor, publisher and newspaper man, Michael Atkins.
Starting his reporting career in Thunder Bay, Atkins also spent time with the Manitoulin Expositor. He moved to Sudbury at age 25 and became editor and publisher of the "Sudbury Northern Life." at the peak of its success, Northern Life published 3 times a week, and was delivered to 40-thousand homes, providing competition for the Sudbury Star.
"Michael Atkins was a visionary whose contributions shaped Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario," said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre in a statement.
"Through his groundbreaking work in community and business journalism, he fostered pride and connection across the region. Initiatives like the Community Builders Awards and Northern Ontario Business Awards reflected his belief in celebrating leadership and potential."
In 1980, Atkins launched Northern Ontario Business, and he owned several other publications, including newspapers in Parry Sound and Sturgeon Falls. Atkins also launched Sudbury Living Magazine and other publications.
He also recently established a fellowship at Laurentian University, supporting research and innovation.
"Michael's influence extended far beyond his professional achievements, with lasting contributions to organizations like Laurentian University and NORCAT. On behalf of the City of Greater Sudbury, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy of leadership, innovation, and community spirit will endure for generations," said Lefebvre.
