Meghalaya's root bridges in Unesco's tentative list of World Heritage Sites

Nearly 100 known living root bridges in 72 villages in Meghalaya are on Unesco's tentative list of World Heritage Sites this year.
Living Root Bridges, found in over 70 villages in Meghalaya highlighting the socio-cultural, social and botanical links between people and nature, has been included in the tentative list of World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), officials said on Monday.
“Delighted to share that "Jingkieng Jri: Living Root Bridge Cultural Landscapes of Meghalaya" has been included in the @UNESCO World Heritage Site tentative list,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma posted on his social media accounts.
“I congratulate all community members and stakeholders in this ongoing journey,” he added.

Villagers grow the living root bridges by training the 'ficus elastica' tree on both sides of water bodies and over a period of about 10 to 15 years where the roots form the bridge.
