MediaTek unveils Dimensity 8000, Dimensity 8100 processors for premium phones in 2022
India Today
MediaTek has showcased two new mobile chipsets which attempt to take on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 processor. With support for a 200-megapixel camera lens, 120Hz WQHD+ display, and other such impressive features, here is how the chips will shape the premium phones this year.
Flagship mobile platforms power only a handful of premium smartphones from global manufacturers. The onus of bringing the next best phones to life then falls on the chipsets that are just a tad bit more humble than the top-of-the-class product. MediaTek might now have a trump in this game, with the launch of its new Dimensity 8000 and 8100.
To have a hint of their capability, know that the Dimensity 8000 series chips come equipped with almost every feature that we see on top-tier phones today. They can power camera sensors of up to 200-megapixel, enable HDR10+ videography at 4K 60 FPS, carry LDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, and brighten up WQHD+ screens at a 120 Hz refresh rate. More importantly, they also support most of the new-age connectivity options including Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Bluetooth LE, and sub-6 GHz 5G.
In case that is not enough of an indication of their prowess, know that the Dimensity 8100 recently beat the much-famed Snapdragon 888 chipset by Qualcomm, which powered most of the flagship phones in the past two years. Naturally, the new MediaTek processors have managed to gain the global limelight thanks to their promised proficiency, and smartphone manufacturers have been quick to notice this.
That is why OEMs like OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi have already confirmed the use of Dimensity 8100 processor for their future smartphones. These smartphones are likely to mark their debut within the running quarter, meaning we may see a Dimensity 8100 powered phone by March-end. Thereon, it is only expected to appear in more and more smartphones.
So here, we take a detailed look at what the new mobile platforms from MediaTek come with. This will also give us a sneak peek of what to expect from the future phones in the affordable-premium segment.
The one big plus that the two MediaTek processors have over the competition in their range is that they are based on TSMC’s 5 nm manufacturing process. With this, they promise faster clock speeds and less power consumption than the 6nm processors.
In its showcase event of the chips, MediaTek said that Dimensity 8000 chips will deliver more than 25 per cent of better CPU efficiency over its previous generation Dimensity chips. Against competitors from other brands, it claims up to 20 per cent more power savings, thus making the phone's battery last longer.
