McCarthy sets vote to remove Cheney from House Republican leadership

Washington — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told House Republicans on Monday that there would be a vote to recall Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney as chairwoman of the GOP conference on Wednesday, saying it's "clear" there needs to be a change in the ranks of House Republican leadership.
"If we are to succeed in stopping the radical Democrat agenda from destroying our country, these internal conflicts need to be resolved so as to not detract from the efforts of our collective team," he said in a letter to House Republicans obtained by CBS News. "Having heard from so many of you in recent days, it's clear that we need to make a change." McCarthy's relationship with Cheney has noticeably chilled since he supported her during a previous failed effort by some House Republicans to oust her from her post as conference chair in February after she voted to impeach former President Trump on a charge of inciting the January 6 attacks on the Capitol. We just had another election with a clear and verifiable victor, overseen by hundreds of thousands of election officials. Those public servants have suffered years of harassment, and despite their successes, are still being accused of taking part in a massive and impossible conspiracy — a conspiracy led by the party out of power to steal an election and cover up all evidence.

Matt Gaetz is meeting with senators on Capitol Hill on Wednesday as he seeks to shore up support for his nomination for attorney general amid calls for the House Ethics Committee to release a report on allegations he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.
