Promising development in all the 100 wards in Madurai Corporation in the next five years, Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth said that she would strive hard towards achieving this goal here on Tuesday.
Presiding over the first meeting of the council where the newly elected members from the DMK, CPI (M), Congress, VCK, BJP among others participated, she thanked the voters of Madurai for electing the councillors.
She also said that the people had elected the DMK after its leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s impressive performance since May 2021. “Following my leader, I will, with the support of all the councillors here and with the guidance of officers and experts, develop the ancient city...” she said.
As the meeting started at 10.40 a.m., the AIADMK members, sporting black outfits, protested against property tax hike, expressed their disappointment over the seat-sharing arrangement in the council hall.
Leading the 15-members, including eight women councillors, S. Solai Raja, the leader of the party in the council, demanded an explanation from the Commissioner K.P. Karthikeyan.
“The people have sent us here as their representatives. Give us the due respect. Do not undermine or underestimate the strength of the AIADMK.”
As the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Nagarajan and the Commissioner did not respond, the AIADMK members got agitated. “If you have decided to disrespect us, we will stand in the same place for every meeting,” they said.
