Mayor Manoj Kumar orders closure of illegal abattoir near MCC slaughter house, ensuring compliance with regulations and environmental standards.
Mayor Manoj Kumar on Friday ordered closure of an illegal abattoir functioning in front of City Corporation’s slaughter house in Kudroli in the city. The MCC abattoir has been closed for over three years.
The illegal slaughter house came to light when reporters questioned Mr. Kumar’s claims that no illegal slaughtering of goats, cows and other animals was taking place near the MCC slaughter house, which is closed for reconstruction three years ago.
Mr. Kumar then proceeded to have look at different rooms of a private farm, in front of the MCC abattoir that claimed of providing goat meat at wholesale prices. He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor P.S. Bhanumanthi and Councillors Sumithra Kariya, Shamshudin, V. Jayalaxmi Shetty, Kadri Manohar Shetty, Veenamangala and several officers of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
Opening the latch of the first room of the farm, the Mayor noticed heaps of skulls and bones of goats and other animals. Similarly he noticed heaps of skin of goats and other animals stocked in another room. Kadri Manohar Shetty broke opened lock of another enclosure of the farm to see machines used to slaughter animals
“This is definitely an illegal slaughter house where goats and other animals are being slaughtered. We (MCC) have not given permission to anybody to operate the slaughter house. I have asked officials to close down this place forthwith,” the Mayor said.
Mr. Kumar said the slaughter house of MCC was closed three years ago. The MCC is building a new slaughter house, which will comply with all directions, including the one from Karnataka Pollution Control Board to install water treatment plant for treating the discharge before it is let out to the Phalguni River. The construction of the new abattoir will be completed shortly.
Mr. Kumar also directed officials to remove the sheds, which stock dry waste, that have come around government abattoir.
