March 31, 2016: MS Dhoni-led India suffered heartbreak in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup as Lendl Simmons and Andre Russells displayed supreme hitting to help West Indies reach the finals.
India were tipped as favourites to win the 2016 T20 World Cup at home but the muscle-might of West Indies proved too hot to handle for the hosts in the semi-final as MS Dhoni's side suffered Wankhede heartbreak on March 31, 5 years ago. On the evening of March 31, 2016, India were sent in to bat on a belter of a wicket at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by Darren Sammy-led West Indies. India got off to a steady start by Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane as the Mumbai duo partnered for 62 runs for the opening stand in just 7.2 overs. Mumbai witnessed a Virat Kohli special after the departure of Rohit. Kohli continued from where he left against Australia, smashing 89 from just 47 balls, with 11 boundaries and a six. Kohli stitched a 66-run stand for the 2nd wicket with Ajinkya Rahane and a 64-run stand with the then captain MS Dhoni who was happy to give the strike to Kohli during the power-packed knock. India posted 192 for 2 on the board and it looked like the hosts had enough to clinch a spot in their 2nd successive T20 World Cup final.More Related News
