Maradu municipality issues eviction notices to encroachers on Kundannoor-Chilavannoor road, PWD accused of failing to act.
The Maradu municipality has served eviction notices on nine encroachers along Kundannoor-Chilavannoor road.
The Public Works department (PWD), which owns the road, had earlier issued a letter asking the civic body to initiate action against encroachments. The municipal authorities had directed the encroachers to vacate the land. However, only one person had vacated, said Antony Ashanparambil, municipal chairman, in a communication.
The eviction notices were pasted on structures set up by those who had refused to receive them. It was the PWD’s responsibility to evict encroachers, but it had failed to fulfil its duty, alleged Mr. Ashanparambil.
The municipality took the initiative following people’s demand and in accordance with Section 207 of the Municipality Act. Stringent action would be taken against encroachments along the road, he said.
Bengaluru south resident Sachin Rai remembers a time when the area around what is today Bannerghatta Road had lush green agricultural fields with ragi and groundnut crops aplenty. “I remember farmers complaining about elephants entering the fields and destroying the crops. The herds would later retreat to Bannerghatta, Anekal forest areas,” he recalled, describing it as a phenomenon that persisted till as late as the turn of the century.
