Man taken to hospital after serious crash at southwest Calgary intersection

One person was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and a busy intersection was closed after a serious two-vehicle collision in southwest Calgary on Wednesday.
EMS was dispatched around 6:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash in the intersection of Sarcee Trail and Richmond Road S.W.
A man in his 40s was taken by ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical, life-threatening condition, EMS spokesperson Helene Hamilton told CBC News.
Calgary police said the man had been trapped inside the vehicle.
Calgary police initially tweeted that the entire intersection was being shut down, but said at 7:15 a.m. that northbound Sarcee Trail had reopened.
Southbound Sarcee Trail would remain closed at Richmond Road, police said, along with the east and westbound lanes of Richmond Road.
Staff Sgt. Darren Smith told CBC News around 8:15 a.m. that drivers should expect delays and find alternative routes if possible.
"At this point, we're asking motorists to avoid the area because roads are shutdown and will be for the foreseeable future," Smith said.
