A police dog was killed and an armed man was shot and injured by Toronto police Tuesday as officers attempted to arrest him in connection with a homicide, Ontario's Special investigations Unit (SIU) says.
Police went to an apartment building on Dixon Road around 8 p.m. in order to apprehend a 44-year-old man wanted for second-degree murder, according to SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette, who spoke to reporters Wednesday morning. Denette could not say in which homicide the man was considered a suspect.
The man fired at police, who did not shoot back, and then fled through a residential neighbourhood before ending up in a backyard on Kingsview Boulevard, Denette said.
A police dog named Bingo was part of the search. The man shot and killed Bingo, Denette said. That is when a police officer shot and injured the man, she added. The man was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains.
The SIU was notified and has invoked its mandate. The agency is called in any time there is an interaction involving law enforcement that results in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw gave his condolences to Bingo's partner and the K9 unit in a tweet and thanked Bingo for his service.
