Man charged with 2nd degree murder in fatal stabbing in Waterloo last fall

A 29-year-old Kitchener man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a Wilfrid Laurier University student in uptown Waterloo last September.
Police announced the charge during a press conference on Tuesday morning.
Police were called to the area of King Street N. and Bridgeport Road just after 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 22, 2023 after receiving reports of a stabbing.
Deron Camillus, 20, was found with injuries. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Deputy Chief Jen Davis said Camillus was enjoying a night out with friends when an altercation broke out.
"During this altercation, Mr. Camillus was attempting to defend his friend when he was fatally stabbed," Davis said.
"Investigators from our major crime unit, general investigations and forensic identification unit have been working since the incident occurred to bring some time closure to Mr. Camillus' family, his friends and the entire Waterloo region community."
