A 25-year-old man from Santhome in the city was arrested by the Triplicane police on the charge of physically assaulting a law student on Anna Salai on Monday (April 7, 2025).
A senior official of the city police said that the student, Kevin Rachel, a resident of St. Thomas Mount, was pursuing law at a private college in Pallavaram. While waiting near the Anna Salai bus stop, a friend of her friend, R. Akash, saw her and stopped. They had a conversation during which Rachel reportedly shouted at Akash, a resident of Doomingkuppam, for taking her friend to various late-night house parties.
Enraged by this, Akash allegedly kicked the law student multiple times in the stomach, and she fell to the ground. Akash’s friends, who were at the scene, tried to bring the situation under control and sent Rachel home. Later, however, she developed a stomach pain and was treated at a private hospital near her house.
On Monday, she lodged a complaint with the Triplicane police, based on which a case was registered against Akash under six sections, including the Prevention of Atrocities Against Women Act. The accused was arrested and produced before the judicial magistrate in Egmore court. He was sent to Puzhal prison.

The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered status quo till July 10 on the demolition notices issued by the Delhi Development Authority against seven residents of Okhla’s Batla House area. The court posted the matter for hearing on July 10, when the other petitions related to the demolitions in the area are also scheduled for hearing. The counsel for the petitioners argued that the DDA and the Delhi government had “indiscriminately targeted properties beyond the identified area and without issuance of individual notices”.
