Police are investigating after a 49-year-old man was struck and killed by a light rail transit vehicle in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday night.
Waterloo regional police say officers were called to an area near Bearinger Road at about 11:45 p.m. for reports that a pedestrian had been hit.
In a news release on Sunday, police said they think the man, who was from Waterloo, had been walking on the tracks when he was hit by the northbound LRT vehicle.
"Emergency services worked to extract the male who was trapped under the train," police said.
The man, who has not been identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No passengers were on the LRT vehicle at the time.
The area was closed for several hours as police investigated.
The death marks the second time in a week that a pedestrian was hit by the LRT.
A student at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener was hit and trapped under an LRT vehicle on Wednesday.
Police said the teen boy was attempting to cross Charles Street when he was struck by an LRT train that was travelling east.
Emergency crews extracted him from underneath the vehicle. He was then taken to a Hamilton hospital by Ornge Air Ambulance with life-threatening injuries.
A GoFundMe page set up to help cover costs for the teen's family says he has undergone surgery and is recovering in hospital.
