Man, 40, killed in drive-by shooting in downtown Calgary

Man, 40, killed in drive-by shooting in downtown Calgary

CBC
Saturday, December 2, 2023 12:36 AM GMT

One man is dead in what Calgary police said was a drive-by shooting in downtown Calgary.

There were multiple calls to police at about 9 p.m. Thursday reporting the sound of gunshots. Officers who arrived found one man dead in the 600 block of 10th Avenue S.W., in the city's Beltline area, police said.

In a media release Friday afternoon, Calgary police said that the homicide unit is investigating.

"This volatile incident showed a blatant disregard for human life and jeopardized the safety of bystanders," said Det. Lee Treit with the homicide unit.

"Video footage and witnesses are vital for us to hold the offenders in this brazen attack accountable, and we are asking for anyone with information to come forward."

Police said the victim has been identified as Thane Cameron Clayton, 40. Police said he is not from the Calgary area. He has ties to Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax.

Police said CCTV footage collected from the area showed the man walking westbound on 10th Avenue S.W., toward Sixth Street S.W., when a dark-coloured SUV pulled up and an occupant of the vehicle fired multiple shots at him before fleeing the scene.

At this time, police said, they do not have information to suggest whether this was a targeted incident.
