Kochi Police are now on the lookout for Malayali women gangs who rob houses. They survey the houses during the day while carrying a baby to avoid suspicion. Then, at night, they break into the house along with male accomplices to rob the place.
A new breed of female Malayali thieves are now on the Kochi Police’s radar. Police officers in Kochi are now pursuing gangs of female robbers who roam the streets carrying babies to avoid suspicion, while they mark houses as potential break-in targets.
According to officers, these women gangs use unique markings to signal that a particular house is on the potential list of places to be robbed. An officer said that the gangs generally target locked houses.
Four women from Kozhikode and Wayanad were recently arrested for robbing Rs 25 lakh worth of valuables from a house in Kochi. Amaravathi (20), of Kozhikode, and Wayanad natives Devi (22), Kasthuri (22) and Devi (21) were arrested by Central station house officer (SHO) S Vijay Shankar.
Although the house robbed by the four women did not have any CCTV cameras, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Jayakumar, led a special team, which, with the help of CCTV cameras in the nearby buildings, nabbed the four women.
“After surveying the house during the day, they break in at night with male accomplices. They observe which homes have CCTV cameras and avoid them. They also don’t hesitate to attack if someone is inside the house when they break in,” said an officer investigating the case.
