The Maharashtra government has sought dismissal of a PIL seeking Rs 3,000 crore compensation from the current ruling dispensation for a state-sponsored bandh condemning the Lakhimpur Kheri incident last year.
The Maharashtra government has sought dismissal of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Julio Rebeiro and other like-minded people seeking Rs 3,000 crore compensation from the current ruling dispensation for a state-sponsored bandh last year.
the statewide bandh on October 11, 2021, was in solidarity with the farmers’ protests and condemning the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.
The petitioner raised the grievance that due to the bandh declared by the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition on October 11, the normal economic, social and other activities were crippled in the state.
The plea made the case that the state government blatantly violated the basic freedoms and fundamental rights of the citizens under Article 19 and 21 of the Constitution, with consequent losses caused to the Centre and the state, the plea stated.

The PIL also sought directions to be issued to the authorities to ensure there is no wrongful and coercive interference with the fundamental freedoms by any political party or group through intimidation or interference in normal life.
The affidavit in reply filed by Home Department deputy secretary Sanjay Khedekar stated that there was no decision taken by the cabinet for the state-wide bandh observed in Maharashtra on October 11, 2021.
