The Tourism Department organised the New Year celebrations at Hotel Tamil Nadu, with DJs, dance, party, food and fun games, among others.
Other star hotels in the city like Courtyard by Marriott, Grand Madurai by GRT Hotels, Fortune Pandyan, Poppys, Germanus, GRT Regency and Taj Pasumalai organised paid parties through the night for their guests to welcome the new year.
As police restrictions were in place in most of the important spots in the city, celebrations were somehow subdued at public places and restricted to in-house locations.
Scores of people thronged the churches in the city for midnight masses.
