Madras High Court reverses discharge of T.N. Minister Duraimurugan from yet another disproportionate assets case
The Madras High Court on Thursday (April 24, 2025) reversed the discharge of Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan and his wife D. Shanthakumari from yet another disproportionate assets case registered against them in 2011, for the check period between 2007 and 2009.
Justice P. Velmurugan allowed a criminal revision petition filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in 2017 and set aside the discharge order passed by a special court in Vellore. The judge directed the trial court to frame charges and conduct a trial.
Since the chargesheet against the accused had been filed in 2013 itself, the judge ordered that the trial proceedings be conducted on a day-to-day basis and completed within six months from the date of the receipt of a copy of the High Court order.
The judge on Wednesday allowed another revision, pending since 2017, and reversed a similar discharge order passed in 2007 with respect to a different disproportionate assets case registered against the Minister and his family members, for the check period between 1996 and 2001.

In his complaint to the police, the Secretary of NMPA said that the former MLA, along with two of his associates, gatecrashed into the chamber of Deputy Chairperson S. Shanthi around 8 p.m. on June 9 with a demand for settling a pending bill. Besides obstructing her from performing her official duty, the former MLA prevented the officer from going out of the chamber.
