Madhya Pradesh: Childline welfare committee rescues minor sold for Rs 2 lakh from Khandwa
India Today
An NGO named Childline welfare committee rescued a minor girl from Khandwa who was sold for Rs 2 lakh. The NGO informed the police and they helped in rescuing the girl.
Abolished by law, child marriages still continue to be prevalent in India, particularly in rural and marginalized sections of society. For many, marrying off their daughters at a young age assures them of security for their girl's child from potential sexual abuse and respite from paying hefty dowries as the girls continue to reach a more mature age.
In one such incident of alleged child marriage being arranged by a girl’s parents, a teenager from Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh was rescued by the childline welfare committee (CWC) after receiving an anonymous tip informing them of a minor girl being ‘sold’ to a man from Ratlam.
As per the report by the Times of India (TOI), the NGO informed the police and, with their help, the 16-year-old girl was rescued.
As per the police, the girl revealed during her counselling that she was sold off to a man named Om Prakash, a resident of Badodiya village of Ratlam, for Rs 2 lakh and was about to marry her, before she got saved.
