Madhuri Dixit remembers when women on sets were only actors, says it’s a joy seeing them in every department now
India Today
Madhuri Dixit recently talked about women’s empowerment by sharing experiences from her personal and professional life. She also shared her hopes for the future.
Madhuri Dixit made her debut with the 1984 film Abodh. A lot has changed since then in her life, in her attitude, and in Bollywood. The actress appeared on this month’s cover of Harper’s Bazaar India and talked about women’s empowerment by sharing experiences from her personal life.
Madhuri Dixit’s The Fame Game premiered on Netflix on February 25. The actress isn’t bothered by ageism and thinks Bollywood has come a long way since she started working. She told Harper’s Bazaar India, “There was a time when I used to go on the sets and the only women on the set used to be actors, the co-actors, and the hairdressers. That's it. Today when I walk in, there are women in every department—whether it's the director, writer, or camera person, and it gives me great joy to see that (sic).”
Madhuri further talked about how her life changed after marrying Dr Shriram Nene. She said, “I grew up in a very protected environment My parents used to always accompany me, even when I was working. But once I got married, I began making decisions by myself. I learnt a lot about life because living in the US. When I was in India, there would always be around 20 people fussing over me at all times, but there I was very independent. I had to do things on my own, bring up my kids—of course, my mom and mom-in-law would come and help me out whenever I needed. But as you grow older, you mature and learn a lot, and grow as a person with your experiences. Today, I use those experiences when I'm essaying a role (sic).”
Madhuri Dixit is very hopeful for the future of women. She pointed out how they are excelling in every field. “We need to recognise that women at different stages in their lives play different roles. Today, women are not just homemakers; they are breaking the glass ceiling, making a name for themselves, and getting lauded for that. And that’s great for each one of us because they’re inspiring us to achieve more. Don't listen to people who tell you what you can or should do. Just go out there and do it. Because people may not support you, but once you have made a mark, they will praise you. You have to do things for yourself (sic),” she said.
