As he makes his directorial debut with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, you can see the passion in Madhavan's eyes. He says it is a 'national disservice' to not know about the genius that Nambi Narayan is. With his film, Madhavan stepped into the shoes of Nambi Narayanan to share his story with the world. Apart from directing and acting, he has also written the story, lyrics and also bankrolled the film.
Ahead of the grand release on July 1, Madhavan spoke to IndiaToday.in exclusively about Rocketry: The Nambi Effect in detail.
Excerpts from the conversation:
Q: Let’s rewind and go back to 2005. In an interview, you said you didn’t think you’d make a good director. From then to now, how do you see your progress?
A: I grew older and heavier, much faster than I thought (laughs). Skill-wise, I’ve grown up as an actor. I didn’t want to be director. I still don’t want to. This was thrust upon me. It became an all-consuming project. When the choice came to me, it was about whether to dump the film or take over as a director. I still think I’d prefer to be an actor.
Q: A lot of thought has gone into turning into a director. Were you nervous?
A: I was actually excited about the subject. I went with a shallow about making a film about a good-looking scientist who fell in love with a Maldivian woman. Then, the case happened and he was falsely accused. But, when I met Nambi sir, my whole perception changed. I knew I was missing something. That man could not have gone through this alone. There was more to him. How can a man talk about his achievements? I talk about my achievements, but he doesn’t.
