A tanker carrying 18 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) met with an accident on Avinashi Road old flyover in Coimbatore early on Friday (January 3, 2025), causing a minor gas leak and bringing the central part of the city to a partial halt.
The police said the tanker detached from the truck when the driver was manoeuvring the flyover’s roundabout. It was transporting the highly inflammable substance from Kochi, Kerala, to the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) LPG bottling plant at Ganapathy, Coimbatore.
The accident took place at 3.15 a.m. The driver of the truck immediately alerted the Fire and Rescue Services. Fire brigades rushed to the spot and sprayed water on the detached tanker. The police cordoned off the flyover and suspended traffic through the accident spot.
Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati declared a holiday for 37 educational institutions within a 500-metre radius of the accident spot.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said the LPG leakage has been brought under control. He said a recovery vehicle of the Indian Oil Corporation from Tiruchi has left for Coimbatore. Meanwhile, the feasibility of transferring LPG from the large tanker to smaller ones was being explored, he said.
The Commissioner added that a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was expected to reach the accident spot soon.
