A woman accused of stabbing a man to death on a residential street in St. John's in 2021 is pleading guilty in connection with the slaying.
Lorraine Obed, 30, appeared by video in Supreme Court on Thursday as her lawyer announced she would accept a plea deal, cancelling a weeks-long jury trial that was set to begin next week.
Instead, lawyers will present a statement of facts on Tuesday — outlining key details about the case — and set a schedule for Obed's sentencing hearing.
Obed was arrested more than two years ago after allegedly stabbing James Corcoran, 49, in the Carter's Hill area.
The specifics of her plea deal haven't yet been revealed, including whether her second-degree murder charge has been downgraded.
The murder shocked residents of the Carter's Hill neighbourhood, with one resident telling CBC News at the time she stayed with the victim and held his hand while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Corcoran was pronounced dead at the scene.
