The Thames Valley District School board has closed Lord Elgin Public School in northeast London because of a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.
The board's website says the case count at the school has risen from two on Tuesday to 11 on Wednesday.
In a statement, the board's administration says it decided to close the school because it was a challenge to operate with COVID cases impacting several classes.
All students at Lord Elgin will now transition to virtual learning until the school reopens on Tuesday, October 5, the board said.
Classroom teachers are in the process of contacting families with information about virtual learning. Families requiring computer devices to access remote learning are being asked to contact the school office.
A COVID-19 pop-up assessment clinic will be hosted at Lord Elgin PS Wednesday from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Families interested in attending the clinic can continue to access the school for this purpose, the board said.
Lord Elgin is the first school in the London area to be closed due to COVID-19 since classes resumed earlier this month.
