Londoners, you've decided: Here are the top neighbourhood projects you voted on
CBC
The results are in and Londoners have decided on which projects will come to life in their neighbourhoods this year.
Residents from every neighbourhood in London had a chance to vote in the city's 2022 Neighbourhood Decision Making program.
A total of $250,000 of funding was divided into five different areas whose projects will receive up to $50,000 each to help develop and improve neighbourhoods. Individual projects get up to $30,000 in funding.
Over 9,900 votes were cast to determine which neighbourhood projects will get funding to be implemented. Ballots were cast virtually, in-person, and over the phone from Jun. 18 to 25.
Here are some of the winners and the funding they'll receive for each neighbourhood:
Nader Alrawi proposed the little free library with Arabic books as a way for his five young daughters to reconnect with their language and culture. He was thrilled to find out his idea made the cut.
"It's hard to find Arabic books for my daughters and I don't want them to lose their language. Right now they speak English more than Arabic at home," he said.
He believes this will be a great step in increasing diversity in London and for the city to move towards more multiculturalism
The city's manager of neighbourhood development and supports, Karen Oldham believes neighbourhood decision making allows all members of London's community to feel heard and to engage in city decisions.
"This is an opportunity for Londoners to tell us what they want to see happening in their neighbourhoods, there's no other opportunities like this where people have a say on how municipal dollars are spent, she said.
"It's an engaging process where they can learn the costing of the things and an educational process that goes with it."
Oldham encourages Londoners to start thinking of ideas to prepare for next year's decision making project.
