The number of new COVID-19 cases in London, Ont., increased by 496 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of setting a new record for daily cases as the Omicron variant continues to drive infection.
The rising case counts are also fuelling outbreaks at local long-term care homes and retirement homes with 13 facilities now reporting outbreaks. All but two of those outbreaks were declared on Dec. 24 or later.
There are also 2,883 active cases of COVID-19 in the London area. London also saw one COVID-19 death over the last 24 hours, a man in his 70s.
London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is caring for 25 in-patients with COVID-19, with eight of those in critical or intensive care. On Tuesday, LHSC was caring for 17 in-patients with COVID-19.
A total of 135 LHSC staff have currently tested positive for COVID-19.
Ontario reported a pandemic high of 13,807 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday — far outpacing the previous record set yesterday.
The numbers continue to rise ahead of New Year's Eve and questions about whether or not schools will return to in-person learning when classes are scheduled to resume on Monday.
It's also possible that the number of actual cases exceeds the reported number, due to a lack of available testing capacity.
