Oscars 2022 made noise not because of the golden trophies or the glamorous stars, but because of the major slapgate drama that ensued at the live event. Everyone is now talking about Will Smith punching Chris Rock on the stage during the live ceremony. The incident took place when Chris, before presenting an award, joked about Will's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and said that she was looking like GI Jane 2. The clip of the incident was shown to Lock Upp contestants in the previous episode. During this, Payal Rahotgi supported Will Smith and said that comedians should not make fun of others. She was taking a dig at Munawar Faruqui.
In the previous episode of Lock Upp, Payal Rohatgi backed Will Smith and said that he did a good thing and nobody should be allowed to make fun of anyone like Chris Rock did. She further said, "These comedians! In the name of humour, they insult Gods and it shouldn't be allowed." Munawar Faruqui joined the conversation and said, "Violence is not allowed at the Oscars."
Payal replied that slapping someone at Oscars is not violence, "A man can slap someone when a joke is cracked on his wife. People should think before making a joke on someone's religion."
For the uninitiated, Munawar Faruqui is a stand-up comedian. During his stand-up tour in India last year, he was arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Chris Rock was one of the presenters at the 94th Academy Awards. While presenting an award, he joked about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, looking like GI Jane 2. Will Smith lost his cool, got up to the stage and punched him hard. He then took his seat and yelled at Chris. Smith said, "Keep my wife's name out of your f***** mouth." Chris said, "Will Smith smacked the shit out of me." Celebrities were shocked to see this incident. The live-streaming of Disney+ Hotstar also stopped for a while. Fans were left wondering if this incident was scripted or real.
