Health units in the London, Ont., area are now offering the Moderna bivalent vaccine booster shot to increase protection against COVID-19's Omicron variant.
The provincial government announced the rollout of bivalent booster doses early Monday morning.
Adults can begin booking today, but appointments will be prioritized for vulnerable people until Sept. 26, when all residents 18 and older will be eligible.
Those vulnerable populations include:
Both the Middlesex-London Health unit and Southwestern Public Health have announced that they are accepting bookings for vulnerable populations as of today.
Appointments for the MLHU'S Western Fair Agriplex and Caradoc Community Centre's mass vaccination clinics can be booked at www.covidvaccinelm.ca or by calling 226-289-3560.
The bivalent booster will also also available at the Health Unit's Community COVID-19 vaccination clinics. A list of clinic locations and times can be found at https://www.healthunit.com/covid-19-vaccine-clinics. Appointments are needed for the new bivalent vaccine, but walk-ins are still welcome for first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at the above clinics.
In order to help meet the expected demand for the bivalent vaccine, the MLHU is expanding operations of the Caradoc Community Centre Mass Vaccination Clinic. Starting today, the clinic in Mount Brydges will be open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Effective today, all COVID-19 vaccine clinics with Southwestern Public Health — which serves St. Thomas, Oxford and Elgin Counties — are by appointment-only. Walk-ins will no longer be accepted. Residents of Elgin and Oxford counties can book online through the provincial portal at https://covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/, or call 1-833-943-3900.
The availability of bivalent vaccine doses will be based on shipment schedules and supply from the federal government, the Ministry of Health said in a news release.
"All previously booked booster appointments for Sept. 12 to 25 will be honoured and, if available, the bivalent vaccine will be offered," the release added.
It is recommended that individuals wait at least six months from the date of their last booster dose.
The new Moderna bivalent vaccines will also be available at participating primary health-care providers and pharmacies.
The first shipment of bivalent vaccine arrived in Ontario last week.
