Lids 4 Life campaign aims to increase ATV safety in northern communities

A new campaign is hoping to help riders of all-terrain vehicles in remote communities stay safe.
Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) has launched its first Lids 4 Life campaign.
During the months of May and June, NAPS will be collecting donations of ATV helmets, which will then be distributed among the 34 northern communities it serves.
"We've had some recent tragic events in some of our communities we police," NAPS Sgt. Cory Oleschuk said Monday. "There has been a marked increase lately in some of the accidents involving ATVs and off-road vehicles."
"The communities we police have [a] distinct lack of resources to acquire these types of safety equipment," he said. "It's not like you can just run down to Canadian Tire ... to buy a helmet. ... So we're trying to get that message out there and try to receive some donations of helmets."
The goal, Oleschuk said, is to get at least 500 helmets donated by July, and the service is looking for new helmets or used helmets in good condition.
"Helmets, much like car seats, do have an expiry date to them," he said. "Any damage, the manufacturer recommends you replace them immediately."
Helmets can be dropped off at the following locations in the city:
