London's largest hospital is warning patients to brace for long waits at emergency departments after briefly hitting a 20-hour waiting time on Tuesday.
Just before 2 p.m., London Health Sciences Centre tweeted that adult patients could expect 20-hour waits for non-emergent cases.
"Please come prepared to wait," the tweet said. "Consider packing water, a snack, headphones etc."
Then, just after 5 p.m., the hospital tweeted an update, saying the wait time had dropped to 15 hours for "non-urgent and non-emergent concerns.
In a statement to CBC News, the hospital said the wait time had dropped by five hours due to the "fluidity around patient flow."
"We're committed to providing up-to-date and transparent information to the community and are working on a more consistent metric for sharing wait times publicly," the hospital operator said.
The announcement comes as emergency departments across Ontario struggle to keep up with volume due to staffing shortages and other issues.
