Letitia James Drops Out of N.Y. Governor’s Race
The New York Times
The move by the state attorney general, which instantly upended the high-profile race, seemed to solidify the front-runner status of the Democratic incumbent, Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, announced on Thursday that she was dropping out of the governor’s race and running instead for re-election.
Her decision, which sent shock waves through New York political circles, upends the high-profile race for governor and further solidifies Gov. Kathy Hochul’s standing as the early front-runner. It will also complicate the plans of a number of candidates who are either running or had been thinking of running for attorney general.
“I have come to the conclusion that I must continue my work as attorney general,” Ms. James, a Democrat, wrote on Twitter. She said that she wanted to “finish the job” on several “important investigations and cases” under her purview.
