'When life gives you lemon, make lemonade,' that's how the old proverb goes, but what does one do when lemon, an essential in Indian kitchens, starts costing Rs 250-Rs 300 per kg? Nine in 10 household consumers surveyed were feeling the pinch of rising prices on vegetables like lemon, beans, ladyfinger, and others in the last one month, according to a survey conducted by LocalCircles.
Around 87 per cent of household consumers surveyed by Local Circle said they were experiencing the rising prices of vegetables like lemon, beans, ladyfinger and others between March and April.
Amongst the 87 per cent of household consumers experiencing rising prices of vegetables like lemon, beans, ladyfinger, 37 per cent of respondents said there was an increase of over 25 per cent in vegetable prices, according to data analysis done by LocalCircles.
On the heels of the rising cost of petrol and diesel, prices of various vegetables have increased significantly and this spike is causing a hole in the aam aadmi's pocket. The middle and low-income households are feeling the heat.
The humble lemon, an essential in the scorching heat, has seen an exponential price rise, with 1 kg costing Rs 350 per kg or a whopping Rs 18 to Rs 25 per piece.
Similarly, consumers are reporting rising prices of vegetables like ladyfinger or bhindi, beans and several others. Both lady finger and beans are selling over Rs 100 per kg in several parts of the country.
Data analysis shows, the reason for price rise of some vegetables is due to the weather and supply situation, the rising prices of petrol and diesel have a big role to play.
