KV MP admission quota, other quotas scrapped, new guidelines issued

The KV MP admission quota and other discretionary quotas for admissions to KVs have been scrapped by the union government, as per fresh guidelines issued by KVS.
The union government has scrapped the discretionary quotas provided to the Members of Parliament, District Magistrates, ministry employees, children and dependent grandchildren of MPs, and retired KV employees, and the discretionary quota of the school management committee chairman, as per the latest notification by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS). This development comes weeks after KVS had put all such discretionary quotas on hold post a review.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, government sources said, “In a revolutionary step to streamline admissions in Kendriya Vidyalas and improve the quality of education, it has been decided to discontinue several discretionary quotas which were beyond the approved students’ strength.”
The sources went on to inform that Education Minister and Chairman KVS Dharmendra Pradhan conducted a review of KVS functioning and noted that these discretionary quotas crowded the classrooms, thereby severely affecting the pupil-teacher ratio and the quality of teaching-learning.
The discretionary quotas, according to the government source, have also affected the total percentage of SC/ST/OBC reservations in schools.
The sources told the news agency, “Keeping all these factors in mind, the decision has been taken to discontinue discretionary quotas of the Ministry of Education, Sponsoring Agency, MPs, etc. There was a long practice of recommending students by the Minister of Education, but the same has been discontinued.”
However, the quota provision for KVs across the country will continue to be provided for some categories including children orphaned because of Covid-19, while admission will be provided based on a list given by the district magistrate, subject to 10 children per KV.
“The provision of admissions will continue for a single girl child and those orphaned due to COVID under PM CARES Children scheme. A small number of discretionary quotas for wards of Kashmiri migrants, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, etc. still continue,” a KV official told the news agency ANI.
