According to a new research report by C40, Kolkata witnessed the highest number of premature deaths due to coal-fired thermal power plant pollution in 2019 among 61 global megacities. Reportedly, Kolkata is likely to witness 10,000 more premature deaths by 2030.
According to a report published in the Times of India (TOI), Kolkata’s residents are the worst hit in terms of premature deaths caused by coal pollution in comparison to the residents of other cities. Also, about 20 percent of the country’s coal-powered electricity is generated within 500 km of Kolkata.
