Police arrested five men for alleged harassment and extortion attempts on Swaralipi Chatterjee, a popular Bengali TV actress, who runs a coffee shop in South Kolkata.
Chatterjee filed a police complaint against an alleged extortion bid against unknown men who visited her shop on Wednesday. According to the actress, the men who arrived at her shop claimed to be working for the local councillor.
Chatterjee stated that a person named Bijoy Dutta asked for money for a musical show which was supposed to happen in the neighborhood.
"A few men arrived at the cafe and asked for money. Initially, some had arrived last week and asked for funds for the show, but I had refused. On Wednesday, a man named Bijoy Dutta stated that he was doing this at the behest of the local councillor. However, the councillor was not present. The men threatened me with dire consequences. They wanted money for a musical show in the neighborhood," Swarilipi Chatterjee told India Today.
She further stated that after being threatened and abused over the refusal, she informed the women's commission and, along with a friend went to file a complaint at the local police station. She alleged that a group of men followed her on bikes while she was returning after filing a complaint.
"I was scared because they were following us and we could identify one individual who had arrived with Dutta while he came to my shop," she said.
Swaralipi stated that she thought of posting the videos where she was being threatened by men on social media.
