The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to provide tabs to the Mayor and his council of members, drawing flak from the opposition.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to go more digital by providing tabs to the Mayor and his council of members.
The civic body has 13 members of the mayor’s council (MMiCs), apart from the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who will be given a tab.
"All MMICs, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are allotted one tab each for smooth operations of online official work. Directed to inform that cost for procurement of such tab shall not exceed Rs 49,000 only" read the official order.
Mayor Firhad Hakim stated that it was being done to cut paper costs and to make sure that representatives can work from their houses in a better way.
"We cannot do what Jyoti Basu did by not allowing computers. Yes, it is a one-time expense but it saves a lot of money that would be used on paper all throughout the year" said Hakim on Saturday.
Jyoti Basu was the longest serving former Chief Minister of Bengal.
This decision has brought flak from the opposition as the civic body has been running low on funds, a fact that was disclosed by mayor Firhad Hakim himself as he presented a Rs 177-crore deficit budget for the fiscal year 2022-23.
