Power prices in India have significantly changed over the last decade and farmers fear that privatisation will make electricity expensive and cumbersome in terms of subsidy.
Even as the Narendra Modi government announced withdrawal of the three farm laws after vigorous protests, farmers’ unions have put six demands in front of the Prime Minister. One of them is to withdraw the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021, as farmers believe it would mark the end of subsidised electricity or bring monetary challenges because the power tariffs will have to be paid first and subsidy claimed later.
