Investigators believe Kishan Bharwad was murdered in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad over an “objectionable” Facebook post that allegedly hurt religious sentiments. Here is all you need to know about the case.
Two bike-borne assailants murdered 27-year-old Kishan Bharwad in Dhandhuka area of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district on January 25. Kishan Bharwad was killed over an“objectionable” Facebook post that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.
The Gujarat police have arrested two men - Shabbir (25) and Imtiaz (27) - in connection with Kishan Bharwad’s murder. Apart from the two killers, Gujarat Police has also arrested a cleric, Maulvi Ayyub, from Ahmedabad. Maulvi Ayyub is accused of providing weapons to Shabbir and Intiaz and is also related to Maulana Qamar Gani.
Accused Shabbir and Imtiaz were taken for recreation of the crime scene on Saturday. Police have also recovered a gun from the spot, as well as the motorbike used to commit the crime.
Meanwhile, Gujarat ATS on Sunday detained Maulana Qamar Gani Usmani from Delhi in connection with the murder of Kishan Bharwad. Usmani has been accused of abetting Kishan’s killer Shabbir. Shabbir had contacted Maulana Qamar Gani Usmani after listening to his speech.
Qamar Gani Usmani is associated with TFI (Tahreek Farogh-e-Islam). Qamar was also arrested in connection with the Tripura riots last year.
WHAT IS THE CASE?
On January 6, Kishan Bharwad had shared a post on Facebook, after which some members of the Muslim community lodged an FIR alleging that it hurt their sentiments.
