"Sittervising" is trending on social media — it's the concept of simply letting kids play independently. Experts weigh in and say kids gain resilience and independence when parents stop "helicoptering."
"Sittervising means to supervise children from a seated position," wrote Susie Allison on Busy Toddler, her personal blog. "Speaking for myself, it's boring to always be playing with your kids. Let's just state it frankly," said Lenore Skenazy of Let Grow in New York City. "When I was raising children, we prided ourselves on our kids' independence and ability to navigate their world," said one Baltimore grandmother. Allison describes herself as a "former teacher with a master's [degree] in early childhood education and a mom to three kids" and said she's been using the term "sittervising" for years.
