Congress MLA Uma Thomas shows improvement after falling at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, extending New Year greetings to sons.
The health condition of Congress MLA Uma Thomas, who sustained severe injuries to the head and lungs after she fell from a gallery at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor in Kochi, Kerala, on Sunday, has shown improvement as she extended New Year greetings to her sons on Wednesday (January 1, 2025.)
“Overall, her condition has improved compared to the situation on Tuesday. The lung condition is better now,” said Dr. Krishnanunni Polakulath, medical director of Renai Medicity Hospital, where she was admitted with serious injuries to the head, spine and lungs on December 29, 2024.
He said that the medical team is looking at whether the ventilator support can be reduced, but it will be decided only after assessing her overall condition. She is moving her legs and hands and responding positively to sensory examination, he said.
The medical team pointed out that there was no need for any major concern over her head injury as it is a non-progressive one. “She is perceiving and oriented and it is a good sign. It is bound to improve, they said.”
Her sons pointed out that she whispered New Year wishes clearly and also moved her legs and hands. She had lifted her legs and hands on command by the doctors, they said.
Ms. Thomas, MLA representing the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency in Ernakulam, had sustained serious head and spine injuries after she fell from a height of about 15 feet from a VIP gallery at stadium.
She reportedly hit her head on the concrete ground below. She was at the stadium to attend a mass dance event aimed at making it to the Guinness Book for the largest number of dancers (approximately 12,000 people) performing Bharatanatyam simultaneously.
