Kerala High Court suspends 5-year sentence for CPI(M) leader K.V. Kunhiraman and others for Youth Congress activists' murder.
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday (January 8, 2025) suspended the sentence of five years’ simple imprisonment awarded to CPI(M) leader K.V. Kunhiraman and three others by the Ernakulam CBI Special Court for murdering Youth Congress activists Sarath Lal P K and Kripesh at Periye in Kasaragod in 2019.
The Bench led by Justice P.B. Suresh Kumar passed the order when an appeal filed by the convicts against the CBI Special Court verdict convicting them and imposing the sentence on them came up for hearing.
Mr. Kunhiraman, former Udma MLA and CPI(M) Kasaragod district secretariat member, Manikandan, Kanhangad block panchayat president, Raghavan Velutholy, alias Raghavan Nair, former CPI(M) Pakkam local secretary, and K.V. Bhaskaran, former secretary of the CPI(M)-controlled Panayal Service Cooperative Bank were sentenced to five years simple imprisonment under Section 225 of IPC for taking away accused Saji George from a police vehicle after the crime.
The CBI court had last week also awarded life imprisonment to 10 other CPI(M) activists in the case.
